EXPERIENCE & PORTFOLIO

EMPLOYMENT

TECHNICAL SERVICES

WARWICK STUDENTS UNION, COVENTRY (2015 - 16)

Leading, and working as part of a team to assist in the preparation of Stage, Technical Equipment and Decor for the successful production of Union Events and, on occasion, contracted events outside of the Students' Union.

I became a Team Leader in early 2016, which affords the responsibility of running events myself with a small team.

SEASONAL HOSTESS

ARRIFANA SURF LODGE, PORTUGAL (Summers 2012 - 2014)

THE REFINERY, JERSEY

INTERN, SUMMER 2014 & 2015

I successfully applied for a 2014 summer internship at The Refinery, a Channel Islands based Communications Agency, and was then invited to return for the following summer.

My first internship, August to September 2014, offered experience in a number of areas within the business, particularly marketing, PR and events management.  I also was given the opportunity to work on several client accounts, including the annual QiFinance Jersey-wide 'Cash Dash'.

Returning to the firm from July to August 2015 allowed me to extend my experience in marketing, PR, market research and social media strategy, while working more independently.

THE NEW THEATRE, OXFORD

PLACEMENT, 2015

As part of an Arts Marketing module in the final year of my undergraduate degree, I was required to conduct a full Marketing Audit and put together an Audience Development Plan for an arts organisation.  I spent two weeks embedded within the Marketing and Publicity Department of the New Theatre, Oxford, learning about its structures, marketing strategies and budgets and also extracting detailed audience data for individual shows.

Following the placement I put together a database to help target each show’s marketing to appropriate postcodes, combining customer segmentation data generated by the theatre’s Purple Seven system with Experian Mosaic reports for the local area. I used one of the upcoming shows as a model to demonstrate how such a strategy could be successfully implemented.

THE BOAR STUDENT NEWSPAPER

HEAD OF MARKETING AND PUBLICITY, 2014 - 15

My role as Head of Marketing and Publicity for The Boar (Warwick University’s student newspaper) enabled me to build a range of skills - including selling print and online advertising space, designing and producing merchandise and materials, implementing social media strategy and managing The Boar’s Marketing and Sales teams.

Much of my energy was devoted to achieving two main aims: reorienting the Sales Team to present a more professional image of the newspaper to our sponsors, and encouraging the Marketing Team to focus on increasing our engagement with the student population on campus.

THE BOAR STUDENT NEWSPAPER

HEAD OF APPS, 2013 - 15

I took on the position of Head of Apps in conjunction with my role as Head of Marketing and Publicity.  We undertook the project after an analysis of our online readership highlighted the fact that 41% accessed the website through their phone or tablet. The decision to develop an App was thus an attempt to both expand the current base of online device readership and develop a more convenient and user-friendly means of reaching students to rival the online presence of our competitors. The Boar is currently one of only a handful of university newspapers to have a fully functioning App.

The development process has spanned the past two years and involved management of the design stages, the App’s release, two targeted marketing campaigns and a launch event.  Leadership of this project exposed me to brand development and project management alongside more conventional marketing skills.

The Android App was released in October 2014 with the platform for iOS released, after a few complications, in December 2015.

ORCHID COMMUNICATIONS, JERSEY

INTERN, JULY 2014

During a two-week placement with Orchid Communications, an agency based in the Channel Islands, I shadowed several of the company’s account managers and also worked independently, putting together and pitching a ‘Friends’ scheme for the Jersey Charity WetWheels.

FAIRYTALES & FIRE (PRODUCTION)

THE OLD RED LION THEATRE

PRINT DESIGN, JULY 2014

I was approached by the Back Here! Theatre Company to design promotional material for their production ‘Fairytales & Fire’, which ran for two weeks at The Old Red Lion Theatre in London.  The material I produced included a Facebook cover and profile photo, and two flyer designs.

THE TRIAL (PRODUCTION),

WARWICK ARTS CENTRE

MARKETING MANAGER, MAY 2014

In March 2014 I took on the role of Co-Marketing Manager for a FreshBlood Theatre Society Adaptation of Franz Kafka’s The Trial.  Based on our submission to the Warwick Arts Centre Panel, the production was accepted for a slot in May 2014.

Alongside flyers, posters and promoting the show on social media platforms (such as Facebook, Twitter and Snapchat), we also used a number of less conventional, staged theatrical interventions on campus, to great effect.

FRESHFEST 2014

HEAD OF MARKETING, 2013 – 14

FreshFest is Warwick University’s annual Drama Festival promoting student written work. The Head of Marketing role entailed not only the promotion of seven individual shows featured in the Festival, but also the Festival as a whole, on a minimal budget. Other than purchasing the domain name for the website, the marketing strategies employed were entirely free.  Work with the festival thus meant producing a successful two part strategy with a simultaneous focus on online and on campus promotion.  All of the shows sold out.

RaW 1251AM

MARKETING TEAM (2012 – 2014)

RaW FM, Warwick University’s student radio station, is one of a handful of university stations in the UK that relies on advertising to fund its operating costs.  After finalising a marketing pack to be sent to potential sponsors, the team set about targeting student friendly businesses to approach.

Over the two years that I worked with RaW, the size of the Marketing Team steadily grew with the objective of gaining more sponsors and professionalising the sales tactics.  I handled the majority of the contracts myself and was particularly active in approaching and engaging numerous sponsors - focusing specifically on letting agents and chain restaurants.
